Last night, just at dusk
I sat in a lofty manner.
The sights and smells
were ones to make me ponder.
It wasn't crystal and china I saw,
nor rich perfumes that
filled the air.
No, it was none of these
I remember as I sat
in lofty wonder.
But cows,
brown and white
against a blue horizon,
grazing in belly deep grass.
A colt kicking and bucking,
in pure delight.
A dog barking
in the distant twilight.
Clover,
mingled with new mown hay.
A fragrance like no other.
Natures treasures,
God's sweet gifts,
not the gold fools
go running after.
